Data recording on the wharf has always been a challenge-out in all weathers; it has traditionally consisted of a stevedore, pencil and clipboard. After much discussion with one of their valued clients, Port Nelson believes it has provided a solution that both captures real time data in any weather and will ultimately provide customers with a seamless data interface and information flow. Using domestic grade tablets covered with a commercial grade protective shell linking with Port Nelson’s wireless network, information is punched in on- wharf and delivered to the company server. The ultimate goal is to remove the need for paper or the re-keying of data in other systems. The tablets run an Android operating system and the application was developed in-house. The whole system is then managed by a webpage which was also built in-house. Further development of the system is planned and other applications are being investigated.
