NOTICE TO RECREATIONAL BOATERS, KAYAKERS, PADDLEBOARDERS & SWIMMERS

Posted on 17/12/2019

Please be advised that due to on-going upgrade work on Port Nelson’s Main Wharf North, it is important to abide by the 50m exclusion zone from any wharves. Navigation Safety By-Law 218 Clause 2.5 refers Infringement $100.00.

Main Wharf North is a worksite and may pose safety risks to those not aware of hazards in the area.

Note that there is also a Moving Prohibited Zone and Total Exclusion Zone around any vessel of 3,000 GRT or more (the bigger size fishing vessels and up). This means big ships have exclusive rights to the cut and smaller vessels should not enter the cut when big ships are there (Clause 2.3).

This year the harbour master’s staff will be out in force and there will be no excuse for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It is the skipper’s responsibility to know the rules and he will be held accountable.

If a paddleboarder or kayaker is within the area of the cut, the “exclusion zone”, he / she will be held accountable.

Enjoy a summer of safety on our waters – be safe, be prepared, be wise.
