QuayConnect named as Green Ribbon Award finalist

Port Nelson has been named a finalist in the Resilience to Climate Change category in the 2017 Green Ribbon Awards for its innovative QuayConnect freight logistics model.
Motivated to reduce fuel consumption and energy use across the company and provide supply chain improvements for customers in the Marlborough wine industry, Port Nelson established QuayConnect in February 2016, working with trucking company Central Express Ltd (CEL) and two freight customers, glass bottle manufacturer O-I New Zealand (NZ) and wine bottler WineWorks Marlborough.
Over the first year of operation, QuayConnect has transformed wine freight logistics across the top of the South Island, reducing truck journeys by more than half between Nelson and Marlborough, which has cut the time trucks are on the road by 10,000 hours. In total, this sustainable transport model has saved 348,436 litres of fuel and 1,602 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in its first year.
Port Nelson CEO Martin Byrne says being named a finalist in the Ministry for the Environment’s highly regarded Green Ribbon Awards out of close to 150 nominations is a great honour and solid recognition of the considerable efforts involved in developing the collaborative QuayConnect initiative.
Byrne says the introduction of QuayConnect is in line with the Port company’s ethos to continually seek to reduce the impact of its activities on the local and global environment.
“In 2007, we became the first port in New Zealand to receive ISO14001 accreditation for continuous improvement in environmental management,” Byrne says. “As part of this sustainable approach to doing business, we could see a clear opportunity to reduce the impact the wine transport sector was having on the environment in the top of the South, as could our project partners.
“Making such a significant difference to the wine sector’s transport energy output within QuayConnect’s first year has been hugely rewarding,” he says. “QuayConnect has surpassed its targets and we’re looking forward to seeing the environmental benefits this model will have over the long term.”

QuayConnect’s model optimises import and export loads, with four dedicated truck and trailers working 24-hours a day moving dry goods (palletised glass wine bottles) from Port Nelson to Marlborough, and bottled wine back to Port Nelson from Marlborough, primarily (QuayConnect also services customers in the Nelson region). This compares with the traditional transport model with trucks travelling empty on one leg of the journey from ship to producer and back.
In addition, the QuayConnect service is 100% scalable and can accommodate any quantity of freight whether for planned transport services or scaling up in an emergency. Following the Kaikoura earthquake, QuayConnect up scaled, enabling Marlborough winemakers with damaged infrastructure to quickly move their valuable wine to secure storage and onto their New Zealand and international customers through Port Nelson.
