Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson benefits from annual charity golf tournament
Posted on 10/12/2014
The 11th annual Nelson Port and Transport Industry Charity Golf Tournament was held at Nelson Golf Course on 20 November with funds raised going to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson.
Teams from Port Nelson’s local suppliers, customers, staff and shipping and transport companies took part in the tournament.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson provides young people aged six to eighteen with adult and teenage mentors. The volunteer mentors spend an hour or two each week with their young person, doing things they both enjoy. The aim is to build a supportive, long-lasting friendship and help the young person realise their potential.
The programme is supported by Nelson Police and is one of 17 operating under the Big Brothers Big Sisters umbrella nationally. Port Nelson became a key sponsor of the Nelson programme in July 2013 and a Motueka branch of the programme was recently established.
This year’s Charity Golf Tournament featured a popular auction of donated items at the end of the day’s play.
Programme Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson, Rachel Saunders, said that it was inspiring to see so many people supporting the event. “We really appreciate the energy and commitment of the event organisers and we know that the money raised will create meaningful and important opportunities for young people in our region.”
More than $100,000 has been raised at the charity golf tournaments held over the last ten years, with this year’s total raised in excess of $15,000.
