Posted on 31/01/2020

You may have noticed the latest visitors to Port Nelson today. We are asking all harbour users to keep a safe distance of at least 50 meters from the whales.  We are as excited as everyone about their visit but there are a couple of things to remember to keep everyone safe including the whales so please observe them from the rear as being in front of them could impede their navigation, maintain a boat speed of less than 5 knots and keep underwater noise to a minimum.

The Department of Conservation also has some advice that is very useful if you are out on the water today https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/marine-mammals/sharing-our-coasts-with-marine-mammals/
