20th-anniversary golf tournament raises another $30,000 for New Zealand Riding for Disabled
Port Nelson celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Charity Golf Tournament this November, raising another $30,000 for the New Zealand Riding for Disabled (NZRDA) Whakatū and Richmond branches. The milestone event brought together representatives from the port, transport, and wine industries for a day of golf and giving back to the community.
The core purpose of NZRDA is to provide interaction with horses to improve health and well-being outcomes for people experiencing disability or who have specific challenges or needs. They aim to enable and support disabled people to achieve good lives, including meaningful participation in and contribution to important life activities and roles in their community.
Over its two-decade history, the tournament has raised more than $306,000 for local charities. Previous beneficiaries include Nelson Hospice, Nelson Special Olympic Squad, Port Nelson Seafarers Mission, Jack Inglis Friendship Hospital, Haven Sports Trust, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson, St John, Nelson Volunteer Coastguard, and LifeLinc.

“On behalf of the Committee, the volunteers and our clients I thank Port Nelson, and your supporters, for your very helpful funding contributions over the last two years from the charity golf days. We rely on grants and donations for 75% of our operational costs ($100,000) before any capital expense on horses, equipment or buildings so the substantial donations from the two charity golf days are very important to us. We will continue to display your support on our three gate entry signs.” – Bill Colgan, President of Whakatū RDA.
